They play a crucial role in the prosperity of the health care community in providing health services. Advanced Practice nurses are often primary care providers and are at the lead of providing preventive care to the public. They are involved in diagnosing, assessing, and managing patient problems; ordering tests and in some states prescribing medications. Regular participation in the regulatory process by advanced practice nurses and the organizations representing them is essential as it protects them from state agencies that often overlook them as potential providers in the programs they operate.  States that have adjusted laws that govern the licensing of nurses to reflect educational developments are in a better position to meet the primary care needs of their residents and have the flexibility to adopt new models of care delivery that make effective use of existing state resources.
