Extra Credit Assignment Bio Name Institutional Affiliated Date Extra Credit Part one on DeYoe et al. 2007 Brown tides are mainly caused by an alga known as Aureoumbra lagunensis and the first time when this alga was discovered to be responsible for this damage was in 1989. The Brown tide organism was dominant until late 1997 where it had been observed in the Laguna Madre ecosystem. To determine how the brown tide challenge could be controlled an experiment was conducted. Aureoumbra lagunensis was discovered to have the highest nitrogen to phosphorus ratio and the reason why the experiment was conducted was to determine if the addition of Nitrogen would distort this ratio and prevent further growth of competitors that lead to brown tides. This test was carried out to determine the response of Aureoumbra lagunensis to nitrogen addition as a treatment strategy. By doing so it was noted that pollen-ovule ratio could be used as a good indicator of the breeding system. This means that high pollen-ovule ratios are associated out-crossing; moderate ratios are associated with xenogamy while low ratios are associated autogamy. The results were significant to the field of study bearing in mind that that was the first attempt to conduct a study under a phylogenetic context. This means better and well-analyzed information was generated and presented for future reference. New relations have been determined through this study and the association between floral traits and breeding systems were also established. Shifts between out-crossing xenogamy and autogamy can be readily determined based on flower size ovule-pollen ratios and anther-stigma distance. Currently floral evolution and breeding systems can be examined and discussed regarding relationship under the phylogenetic context. Therefore new phylogenetic reconstruction is a milestone towards critical analysis in determining the relationship between breeding systems and floral evolution. [...]
