Student name Instructor Subject Date Tutorial 1 Bernard Magubane (1971) in his study critically looked at the indices that were used in colonial Africa to bring social change. Magubane focused his writings in the anthropology of culture change in Africa. Magubane argued that after the end of colonialism most Africans were going through acculturation or what is directly referred to as westernization (Magubane: 171 74). Magubane felt that the methods and analysis which other anthropologists conducted were biased and only favored the western people and worked actively against the struggles of the Africans. Magubane specifically focused on the indices that were used by colonial anthropologists which omitted the key roles that the colonial systems played in Africa. Maxwell Owusu (1978) critically analyzes the ethnography of Africa. Like Magubane Owusu is also concerned about quality of the research data gathered from the studies in Africa. Owusu identifies one key issue Although land has a wide range of uses agricultural production should not be treated as insignificant or non-existence. The South Africans should organize their lands well and use land in ways that are distributive. Therefore the issue of land question being reduced to the agrarian question should not blindfold us from focusing on production as the problem and concentering on productive agriculture as the solution.
