However, one needs supplies such as dyes, brushes and canvases to create a painting, but only a camera to create a photograph. It is possible to make copies of a photograph without any loss in quality, but altering a painting is impossible unless one redraws it or digitizes it and them modifies it. Unlike painting, one does not need a lot of knowledge to take a photograph, unless he/she is a professional photographer. While there are many differences between photographs and paintings, image-editing software helps bridge the gap between them. There is a difference in the creation process of photographs and paintings. Often, the painter will have the object he/she is painting as a reference, but in some cases, can paint from memory (Pollitt, 2014).

Painting can take a long time, depending on the size and complexity of the project. Photographs are more versatile than paintings, and one can manipulate them in more ways than paintings. In its digital format, a photographer can change the photo’s color scheme, such as from RGB for the screen or the web to CMYK for print (Wright, 2016). A photographer can also change the image’s mode from color to grayscale. Moreover, digitized images can be copied countless times without any loss in quality (Wells, 2015). While it is easy to create copies of a photograph, one needs to have the rights to the image or have permission from its owner before using it in any way to avoid infringing the copyright laws.

On the other hand, it is difficult to create a copy of a real painting and doing so leads to loss of details and subtle differences in subsequent paintings (Richmond et al. Moreover, there are many ways to identify counterfeit art created to profit by selling fake artwork purporting it to be original. One needs more knowledge to create a painting than to take a photograph. These supplies run out after some time, and the artist has to purchase others to continue painting (Ma et al. On the other hand, one only needs to charge their phones or connect their computers to the power source because the biggest investment is purchasing the camera. The democratization of cameras and image editing software has reduced the overall price of a photograph.
