Some include poverty, children’s personality, sex; males are more likely to be injured than females, single parenthood, parental availability, and education. Some studies have even pointed to ethnicity as a factor for unintentional injury with minorities more likely to be affected. Urie Bronfenbrenner developed the ecological systems theory. It is a model that explains the effect the surrounding environment has on the wholesome development of a child or a person (Berk 20). It is also known as the bioecological model. Berk 20-21) States that the mesosystem describes the interactions between the microsystems. In our list above, lack of parental availability or attention which falls under the mesosystem might increase the risk of unintentional injuries in children. Ethnicity, poverty and low parental education fall under the macro system.
The macro system involves values, laws, and customs enforced by the society or government. Governments that don’t prioritize poverty reduction, bridging minority gaps or strive to promote child safety standards among minorities or to parents who are unaware contribute to children’s injury and therefore inhibit development.
