Northern advantages Population The expectations of the north of for a quick conquest were all rational since the union had various material advantages compared to the south. Back in 1861, the population of the union was 22 million compared to that of the League which was 9 million. Another advantage is materials and industry. The Northern state had some other benefits as well. They were well known for their existing navy, and they were commonly known for their production of firearms than the south. The southern state had a defensive battle. The union had the obligation of waging an aggressive war that will inhabit the south, and the Confederacy had a simple task of belligerent on the defensive. The Confederacy had the aim of frustrating the northern efforts and their intention to conquer.
