These books were written at different times and mostly encompass the work the prophets had or did during their time. Prophets were used to convey God’s message to the people. Their work revolved around informing people of God’s plans to them and lived as role models to those who ascribed to the Christian faith. These prophets live during a time when Israelites are engaged in sin and God warns them of severe punishment. After failing to listen to the word of God as described by prophets, God destroys Jerusalem by allowing Babylonians to conquer it. The book was written to send a message to the people of Judah who were going through both revival and rebellion. From Chapter 1 – 33, the book of Isaiah addresses the people of Judah on God’s plans on the “Day of Yahweh” when Jerusalem will be his center of rule for the entire world3.

It talks about why the city of Jerusalem needs to be punished and cleansed first before other nations start coming to it for instructions. Jeremiah laments about the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians. Throughout the book, Jeremiah brings out two distinctive themes of covenant and confessions9. The Book of Lamentations The book of Lamentations is a collection of laments about Jerusalem’s destruction. It consists of five different poems that are divided in chapters for the book. Each chapter has 22 verses. Regarding its authorship, the book of Lamentations does not clearly provide its author. The purpose of this book was to highlight the results of living a life of sin characterized by idolatry and immorality. God was able allow the Babylonians to besiege, burn, destroy, and plunder the city of Jerusalem due to their continued and unrepentant immorality and idolatry. The Temple, that had been built by Solomon approximately 400 years13 before was also put down.

The book is a lament of what happened to Jerusalem and Judah. It aspires to give Christians a clear picture of what God’s wrath could look like if people do not shun away from life of sin. At the start of the Book, Ezekiel is brought out as the author of the book (Ezekiel 1:3). He writes from a first-person perspective about the visions and revelations of God. When King Nebuchadnezzar took Jewish captives to Babylon, Ezekiel was 25 years old and after five years in captivity, the vision of God appeared to him and he began speaking to those who had been exiled. The book was written between 593 BC and 565 BC15. As already noted, the book was written by Ezekiel when he was a captive in Babylon.

The most distinctive feature of this book is when God refers to Ezekiel on numerous occasions as the watchman on a tower. This symbolizes that Prophet Ezekiel was supposed to warn people of the impending danger and the responsibility they had in responding to the alarm raised by the watchman. The Book of Daniel The book was written by Daniel who, just like Ezekiel, was in captivity in Babylon. While in Babylon, he was given the name Belteshazzar and was selected to be one o the youth who were suppose to serve the king. Ezekiel and Daniel existed at almost the same time. The main theme portrayed in this book is God’s sovereignty over history and earthly kings. Conclusion The five major book of prophets begin with Isaiah to Daniel.
