He decided to take the law into his own hands by stealing from the wealthy and giving it to the poor, thus making the peasants love and refer to him as a just person. The film portrays a social system that was dominated in Medieval Europe where the Crown gave lands to the nobles in exchange for protection by the military. Peasants were forced to stay on their lords’ lands while attending to the homes, laboring and sharing their produce so that the military could protect them. In Medieval Europe, feudalism combined the legal and military customs by structuring the society around the relationships derived from land holdings in exchange for labor services. Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood portrays some traits of feudalism which was the main system of government during his time.

Women and children who resisted the law were tortured and persecuted while they received low wages out of their long working hours. Peasant women were responsible for domestic activities such as caring for the children and livestock and sometimes joining their husbands in the farms during harvesting season (Ward 1235). However, some women challenged the stereotyped image of their oppression and subservience in medieval Europe. For instance, women would exercise royal authority on behalf of their absent husbands such as in the case of Maid Marian whose husband died as a knight at the battle of the Crusades.
