It is no longer like in the past when people would remain married until death parted their ways. Most of the married people today seem not to understand the importance of the marriage institution so that they easily give up and leave their children with their partners to take care of them. Some people have argued that those children brought up by single parents have differences in behavior and self-esteem when compared to those brought up by both parents. Other people have argued that it is hard to tell the difference between a child brought up by both parents and one brought up by a single parent. People have different perceptions about single parents and their ability to take care of their children.

There were many reasons behind the divorce and since my mother could not take it anymore, she was willing to take care of us through all means possible. It was a time when I realized that life had taken a different direction. My father used to work with the government and as a head in his office; he was earning enough to give us luxurious items, which we used, in the house. We would also go for holidays and spend enough time away where we would have fun. My family was all I needed and I felt safe when my father was around. I would also wake up early to prepare them for school. Most of the times my mother was late from work and I had to figure out what the two would feed on.

Instead of sitting down and regretting about my father leaving, I was encouraged to support my mother through the challenges and I made it clear to her that our lives had taken the right direction. I remember telling my mother that I was glad about my father leaving because he gave me a chance to look at life in a different way. In most cases, when a child grows without a father, they get a chance to identify with a different kind of life in which not everything is assured. However, once he left, I knew that I had to make my life better. I also felt that I had to make a point to my father that despite leaving, I would stand with my mother and my siblings to the end.

I promised my mother that I would work hard enough to change her life. I was never tired of helping my mother and I would not spend time with my friends because I knew that I had to do house chores. I also learned the aspect of time management through which I had a schedule of the different things that I had to do in the house and those related to my education (Brazelton, 2018). However, this was not the case since I do not recall any moment when my mother was angry or unhappy. She always wore a happy smile and she kept glowing all through. When people argue that the single parents do not take care of their children's emotional needs, I would say that my mother was always there and took care of our emotional needs with effectiveness.

We were a happy family always and up to date each of us has positive things to say about our mother because she has never given us reasons to be sorrowful or sad because of things that have happened in the past. When growing up in a family headed by a single parent, one gets an opportunity to know that life does not always give the good things. Single parents define the path their children follow (Brazelton, 2018). Some may take the wrong path but others will make ends meet regardless of the challenges they face in the accomplishment of this goal. Some children might feel inferior because of having one parent but others take this as an opportunity to prove the society wrong where they make remarkable achievements in their lives.
