environmental design

Share your thoughts from the content you reviewed and the NAEYC statement you read to in 4.1. Appropriate Spaces. SubUnit 4.1 Designing Your Classroom NAEYC s Professional Preparation Standards have described how early childhood professionals promote learning and development by designing learning environments. The environment should be healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child. Is Your Classroom Safe? NAEYC states that when a classroom is healthy, professionals have designed it to be safe and secure and to promote physical and emotional development. For example, a healthy toddler classroom might include a child-proof gate and soft carpeting to encourage safe gross motor development. It also could have unbreakable mirrors mounted at toddler level, so the children can explore their facial expressions and self-awareness. Functional Areas 1 and 2 deal with the health and safety of the environment, which includes emergency procedures, materials maintenance, and providing opportunities for rest in the classroom. Does Your Classroom Communicate Respect? A supportive and respectful environment reflects respect. Each child s culture, home language, individual abilities or disabilities, family context, and community must be thoughtfully acknowledged as valuable. Teachers must not just teach tolerance, but actively model a supportive attitude toward diversity. For example, kindergarten teachers who work near military bases would acknowledge and affirm the difficulties families face when a parent is deployed. The classroom library might include books that discuss when loved ones are separated. The dramatic play center could have suitcases and telephones so children would have a safe place to explore the aspects of travel and communication that are particular to military culture. NAEYC encourages teachers to see child development as necessarily entwined with culture and design learning environments that support development through child-directed play and adult-guided investigations. Does Your Classroom Challenge Your Students? The classroom environment should be designed to include opportunities for each child to be challenged cognitively, physically, and socially. For instance, an infant room can include several different forums for feeding infants as they grow and develop. A newborn will get his bottle while he is cuddled in a rocking chair. However when he begins to show head control and lose his tongue thrust, a supportive high chair is available in the same classroom so that he can learn to eat cereals and purées that a teacher spoons into his mouth. At the end of his first year, he may be ready for a high chair with a tray so he can practice his pincer grasp by self-feeding. Functional Area 3 specifically addresses the learning environment by discussing age-appropriate room arrangement, materials, and the importance of a schedule that responds to the needs of your students. A learning environment is challenging when each child is able to grow and develop at his or her own self-determined pace. More about early childhood environments, review rating scales for each kind of child care setting: Early Childhood Environment Rating Scales Answer these question: 1. The importance of environmental design. 2. The relevance in has to instructional and developmental outcomes to children. 3. Your recommendations on how you will do this in your future classroom.
