Islamophobia after the Election of Donald Trump

This is due to the Islamic State also known as ISIS confession that it is directly involving itself and executing terrorism activities. The Islamic insurgent groups have been on the radar of the Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) for decades since the bombing of the Twins Tower during the historic 9/11. Trump utterances generated a lot of debate on the social media during and after his election to the White House. Muslims around the world have reported harassment and incidences of Islamophobia in the social media platforms and on the ground. Political commentators around the world have linked Islamophobia to Trump’s damning utterances. The social media and other cyber spaces have been the worst places for the Muslims and Hooper is urging the relevant stakeholders to take stern actions against those people perpetrating religious discriminations.

The people of color and other members of the minority communities have been disadvantaged by the Trump’s policies. The travel ban against the undocumented immigrants has been used to indirectly fight Muslims thus promoting Islamophobia. For instance, restricting the immigration of people from some Islamic countries into the United States was a direct affront to the members of Muslim community around the world. The presumption is that the largest number of undocumented immigrants in the America is Muslims. From this perspective, it is now evident that Islamophobia is now worse in the Trump era than during the 9/11 attack. Several anti-Muslim incidences have been reported around the world since Trump assumed presidency. In May 2017, two men were killed and another person badly injured during an incident in Portland, Oregon, when they were trying to solve a stalemate where a man was reportedly hurling anti-Muslim insults at two women.

The incident happened in a train where different people converge to meet their travelling needs. In another case, six people were killed and 10 others sustaining injuries when a gunman opened fire indiscriminately in Quebec City, Canada. Some of the orders were quashed by the high court on the grounds that they were discriminative in nature and in spirit. White House would later argue that the orders were not a strict ban on the Muslims claiming that they were only meant to eliminate and get rid of rogue elements from some countries. Some of the orders are still operational while legal proceedings challenging their constitutionality are still being handled by the courts. The debate on whether president Trump is fueling Islamophobia took a new dimension when he retweeted three religious animosity videos that were originally posted by the British First (Buncombe).

British First is considered as the United Kingdom’s version of the America’s white supremacists. With the support of some Republican politicians, Trump has used the social media to attack the Muslim community. Therefore, it can be concluded that Trump is primarily responsible for the rise of Islamophobia in the United States and around the world. John Locke Views John Locke is considered as one of the earliest philosophers who explored the subject of freedom of thought, speech, and worship (Andalusi paragraph 1). Locke lived during the period when the Catholic Church was facing rebellion from the Protestants in Europe. The English philosopher then conceptualized a school of thought aiming at reestablishing religious harmony in the society. The European Christians were civilized but violently intolerant and Ottoman Muslims were tolerant barbarians.

His views helped to negotiate and bring sanity to the divided society was becoming more religiously intolerant. Locke would still discourage Trump from promoting Islamophobia and instead promote liberalism and religious harmony. Judith Shklar on Liberalism In the passage The Liberalism of Fear, Shkar promotes her views on political and religious liberalism (Baehr 100). Shkar opines that liberalism is a tool that seeks to integrate the condition of political freedom in a society. She argues that the state should not infringe the rights of her citizens and should instead protect them. Therefore, she would be unhappily witnessing the innocent members of the Muslim community being targeted and humiliated. Conclusion The election of the Donald Trump as the president of the United States has brought many misfortunes to the Muslim community.
