The governments of Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Canada and New Zealand during a recent meeting agreed to force technology providers to provide “lawful access to users’ encrypted communication. ” The five countries argue that the objective of this move is to pursue security threats and prosecute criminals. If this is implemented, the level of criminal activities done through technology which has been on the rise will decrease. In Paris, 2015, 89 people died and 368 were left with injuries during a terror attack. This attack, according to some sources, had been planned in Syria, organized in another country, Belgium, and was carried out in France. Activists have expressed their fear of being harmed if their opinions can be traced back to them. To their defense, they use encryption as a tool to air out their views without being known.

This concern is very complex. Fairness can only work out if all the parties involved are fair. Will encryption be fair if it used as a tool to kill innocent victims? Will it be termed to be fair if other users are being victimized? When used by terrorist, encryption by all means cannot be termed to be fair. Technology providers such as apple, and whatsapp should be committed to providing the governments with timely and accurate information when called upon. Development in the field of technology has without any question led to innovations in the way criminals carry out their activities. It is therefore very important that the authorities be given access to the information shared among every person so that any suspicious communications can be acted upon.
