The Gerontologist, 48(5): 622-636. Gerontology Tenets of the article The researchers to this article review the effects of alcohol on the health of the elderly. The study primarily looks into the health of the elderly who are of 65 years and over. The article delves into the effects of alcohol consumption on the health status of the persons of 65years. The authors employed the use of data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions which was a national survey that was conducted in relation to alcohol consumption and the elderly. Gerontology and Psychology Tenets of the study The authors conducted two longitudinal studies that observed the drinking patterns of the women across a period of eight to ten years. The first part of the study, explores the drinking trajectories of the women population within the follow up period.

The second phase of the study, evaluated the common trajectories obtained from the first phase of the study. Based on these commonalities, the authors sought to weigh the percentage estimates of the trajectories over the sample. Implications of alcohol on the elderly as on the article Ideally, from the study, it was concluded that the heavy drinkers were not retirees. Similar to other age groups, the elderly exhibited feelings of freedom and care free attitude. Implications of alcohol on the elderly as per the article The effects of alcohol on the elderly were found to be negative in terms of sleep as it worsened insomnia and caused breathing difficulties. The authors concluded that the moderate use of alcohol among the elderly was safe to their health.

They note that alcoholism is a factor that begins from their adolescent years and progresses to old age. Additionally, unlike most perceptions, the authors recognize that alcohol abuse among the elderly is not uncommon and it is factor that should be looked into.

As such, the age-related issues such as biologic, physiologic and psychosocial issues are among the key factors that pose challenges in the diagnosis and management of alcohol disorders among the elderly. Heavy drinking among the population was perceived to be no more than two drinks on a daily basis and not more than seven in a week.
