Document 1

Nick is dropped off at the abandoned town and sets out for the woods where he intends to camp and fish in the river. The river is one of the most significant symbols in the story. For Nick, it stands for assurance and certainty. He is bothered by changes taking place such as the trout’s sudden movement and the burnt down town of Seney but the river gives him comfort as he knows it will always be there. The river symbolizes nature and its simplistic and healing properties that are important when civilization has ruined everything else. Contrary to Nick’s campsite that is orderly and neat, the swamp is deep and dark and fishing in it is described as a “tragic adventure.
