Difference between diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus Diabetes Mellitus and diabetes insipidus are two distinct medical conditions. Diabetes mellitus is a condition resulting from the failure of the kidney to produce insulin, the hormone that regulates sugar levels in the body (Perrotta 462). The situation may also develop while the body builds resistance towards insulin. By contrast, diabetes insipidus is a condition of the inability of the kidney to regulate fluids. Also, these individuals feel thirsty, and the urge to take more water since the body tries to find a way to compensate for the high amount of water loss through frequent urination (Perrota 461).

Dehydration results while these type of patients do not drink water at the same rate as urine output. Diagnosis The patient informed the doctor to be having an extreme thirst and to be passing the excess amount of odorless and colorless urine. Also, the doctor inquired about the family history of diabetes and recognized that a relative has a similar issue. The doctor resulted in the use of the water deprivation test in order to study urine output pattern and to monitor body weight during the period.
