These two use their family backgrounds as an alibi to justify their vices. They become lovers when Mickey visits Malory’s home as a meat delivery man. Malory’s father is sexually abusive and her mother is ignorant. Mickey, on the other hand, has a criminal history after serving time in jail and escaping. The movie brings to light a sense of sycophantic rage that exists in human beings, more so, Mickey and Malory. The two are brought together by their love for violence and their desire for each other. The first scene of Natural Born Killers introduces the audience to Mickey and Mallory before sinking into a psychedelic dream of the time the two characters met. For instance, in the first scene, the recollection of how the two met is presented in a comedic manner and in a parody of the television show "I Love Lucy".

The director takes advantage of black humor to make light of a situation that would appear offensive and very serious in another situation. The parallel sound is introduced later on as the sound is as a result of the actions on the screen and copy its actions. One example of the way Natural Born Killers applies these techniques can be seen in the scene where Mickey and Mallory are in a hotel room where they separately abuse a female hostage and a gas station attendant. The film also uses perspective cinematography, convoluted editing, and sound. The film is in no way similar to the typical Hollywood films as it throws the art of the film right in the face of the audience. The recollection scene is filled with ambiguity as the audience is unsure of whether to laugh or not when the scenes filled with child molestation, abuse, and even incest.
