What is Leadership? Critically Evaluate the Various Conceptualisations of Leadership and their Relevance for Organisations Today Leadership is one of the concepts with no universal definition. As a result there are uncountable definitions but none captures all the aspects of leadership. Northouse (2007) and Rowe (2007) define leadership as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Bolden (2004) states that leadership is dependent upon the process of influence. He further states that people work towards group goals through personal motivation from leaders and not through coercion. These definitions depict leadership as a complex phenomenon that involves many important social personal and organisational processes. This paper will evaluate some of the current literature and conceptualisations of leadership. The aim of this evaluation is to expound on the concept of leadership and to determine its relevance to businesses and organisations today. The recent Review March/April. Luft J. & Ingham H. 1955.
