The Adverse Relationship between Social Media And The Development Of Interpersonal Skills Shubham Gupta 1002065659 Date Social media has become one of the most prevalent forms of communication due to its benefits and ease of use. However these benefits have underlying threats to the youth’s development of interpersonal communication skills (Raine 2006). As a result social media communication replaces face-to-face interpersonal interaction as a primary relationship-building platform (Turkle 2015). Unfortunately as social media communication replaces the interpersonal and face-to-face communication as the more preferred medium of interaction the former does not exactly emulate and replicate the latter in terms of authenticity (Keller 2013). This affects the development of interpersonal skill among the youth which consequently reduces their relationship-building potentials. Communication behind a cell phone or computer screen reduces body language and social cues leading to the disconnection from the real world (Thurlow & Bell 2009).
