This involves how Sundiata enabled the empire to conquer other small kingdoms which existed in the region. It also outlines the different cultural aspects which were maintained during the time which Sundiata existed. This explains the use of the different cultural aspect and the different activities such as rituals which were used on different occasions in the Mali tradition. Such aspects form part of the cultural heritage which has been passed through numerous generations. The epic portrays the African tradition as it was practiced by different African communities in ancient times before civilization. This can be proved in the story when Sassouma plans to assassinate Sundiata by instructing 9 witches to kill him, but when they found Sundiata to be exceptionally kind and generous they decide to protect him.

As a result, Sassouma’s evil plan backfires. This is a clear indication that magic cannot be used wrongfully since it is bound to protect people. Therefore, the magic in the epic of Sundiata is for protection. In addition, magic is used as a guide to destiny. Through magic, African beliefs and spirituality are restored through Sundiata. In conclusion, magic is of great importance in the epic of Sundiata. First, they present a picture of the association between Islam and the local spirituality which greatly impacted the West African culture. Secondly, the element of magic in the epic of Sundiata serves the purpose of separating good from the evil, and support the importance of destiny and fantasy among the African people.
