Snopes believes that loyalty to one’s family should come before everything else. On the other hand, his son believes that he ought to remain loyal to the law. The Snopes family exists away from the societal laws and basis their moral code on loyalty to family. The conflict is seen between the different loyalty beliefs, choices and preferences the father and the son have. In person, Sarty struggles with the pressures his obtaining with this father to do what the Snopes family expects of him. Snopes, on the other hand, is a representation rebellion against the inequalities of the Old South as well as the southern ethos. The beginning of the family to work for the major gives Sarty a chance to work out his ethical senses and a re-building of the values the Old South has lost.
