Wit practically evaluates the sensory evidence as well as prudential reason. On the other hand, the sense of belief is seen to reject reliance of senses and the use of reasoning. Beatrice and Benedick cannot be labeled as an ideal couple but circumstances and the situations that they undergo gradually turn them into becoming a better couple. The wit-play of Beatrice and Benedick mocks love excesses as simply irrational madness (Gordon, 283). On the other hand, the love triangle between Claudio and Hero evidently moves from love to hate. Beatrice and Benedick seem not to get along well when the lady calls Benedick Signor Mountanto which when interpreted seems to be rude words for a woman to call her man. This happens in Act 1 scene 1 whereby she asks, “I pray you, is Signor Mountanto returned from the wars, or not?” Through these words, she suggests that Benedick has a big head.

This negative manner in which she refers to her lover suggests a cold relationship. This can be attributed to the wit and intelligence that the two characters have and this affects their relationship negatively. However, it is surprising how she mentions him before anybody else. She responds by saying that she expects to have a husband when God makes men out of metal, but she would not have a husband from the existing men. It is simply because of her wit and intelligence that she rejects them, saying that they are made out of dust. She sees them as creatures that cannot overrule her and that no man could ever be worthy to have her. Benedick on the other hand believes women are untrustworthy and therefore decides that it would be well if he remains unmarried.

His relationship with Beatrice is somehow combative. The relationship between Claudio and Hero is effortly affected by mere schemes simply because of the impressionable character of Claudio and furthermore she is seen to have a tendency to act in an impulsive manner. Don Pedro takes advantage of these weaknesses of Claudio in order to wreak havoc on the relationship. Beatrice and Benedick’s relationship seems to be more satisfying than Hero and Claudio’s courtship. This is because the former couples are in true love from within themselves and though they appear as if none cares about the other, they actually do. It is true that both the couples share a common problem when it comes to trust issues. Claudio is convinced at first sight that Hero is the sweetest lady that he has ever set his eyes on.
