funderising ethics

Fundraising ethics are a critical topic in today’s environment. From what is a reasonable amount of overhead to frequency of contact, from use of “composite” stories to privacy issues, fundraisers are being challenged to rethink their long-established practices for raising funds. Ian MacQuillin of Rogare, the fundraising think tank at Plymouth University (U.K.) notes that “Ethical fundraising balances the duty of fundraisers to ask for support (on behalf of beneficiaries) with the right of the public not to be put under undue pressure.” For the final assignment, prepare a position paper (minimum of 12 pages plus cover page and references), following the essay format provided) that responds to this question: “How can a fundraiser strike a genuine balance between the needs of the nonprofit organization and its beneficiaries, and the rights of the donors?” Reference material you must consider (but is not limited to): a) Code of Ethical Standards, Association of Fundraising Professionals (http://www.afpnet.org/Ethics/EnforcementDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=3261) b) Rights Stuff, Fundraising’s Ethics Gap and a New Theory of Normative Fundraising Ethics (https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/uploads/production/document/path/7/7407/Rogare_ Fundraising_Ethics_White_Paper_v1.1.pdf ) c) “Opinion: The Gaping Hole At The Centre Of Fundraising Ethics” by Ian MacQuillin (http://blogs.plymouth.ac.uk/criticalfundraising/2015/06/10/opinion-the-gaping- hole-at-the-centre-of-fundraising-ethics/) To back up your position, consider these questions at a minimum: 1. Why should (or should not) an organization proactively outline an ethical policy related to the raising of funds for the carrying out of its mission? 2. When establishing standards of ethics for fundraising, what factors should the nonprofit organization consider? 3. What are the implications for fundraisers and the organizations that employ them of an ethical policy, especially given the importance of receiving donations for survival? 4. What due diligence, if any, should a nonprofit organization do before accepting a major donation? 5. Should a nonprofit organization have policies that could lead to refusal of a donation, and if so, why? How should this policy be developed? 6. What actions should an organization take to avoid real or perceived conflict of interest in its fundraising? 7. What expectations are realistic for donors to have when they make a donation to an organization? Do these expectations vary by the size of the gift, and if so, in what way? You must use the essay format and comply with APA standards for all references.
