Women have also been in the front in fighting for gender equality and inclusion in matters of country leadership by venturing into active politics. Victoria Claflin became the first woman to testify before the Congress arguing that the 15th amendment enfranchised women as well as African American women. Victoria C. Woodhull was the first woman to vie for the presidency in America on April 2, 1870 (Leen 2014). Areas where women have been held back for strictly gender reasons One of the areas women are been held back is on issues of equal pay. Women still get lesser pay compared to men. “The first woman to declare herself a presidential candidate, announced her run on April 2, 1870, by sending a notice to the New York Herald” (Leen 2014).
