The Conventions Of Descriptive Writing Descriptive writing is aimed at describing people, places or things in ways that create concrete pictures of what these things or people look like, or how the things work, vividly in the minds of the audience (Donovan). The conventions of descriptive writing include four things. The first is that descriptive writing ought to be either subjective or objective. The second is that descriptive writing should enable the reader to visualize through the use of sensory details. The third is that descriptive writing should be organized either in order of importance, in chronological order, or in terms of location such that a full description of the subject is achieved by the three. Another example is that of a writer who grows up in a poverty-stricken environment.

Their exposure to these negative images would make them more inclined towards creating negative descriptions of things or places. To counter this, a person needs to build their emotional intelligence so that they can re-program their mind to replace negative perceptions with positive ones, and in turn, describe things objectively when the need arises to do so. On the other hand, people may be influenced by other forms of the external environment such as the media, which influences peoples perception of things. Sometimes, what the media professes to be negative would be perceived as negative by the masses and the individual who in turn describe the subject in the same light. In a different light, a users life exposure has an effect on their descriptive writing.

For example, traveling inspires writing creativity as it makes them more capable of describing subjects and the world in ways that the reader can relate to. Vast exposure to places, things, smells, tastes, and cultures stimulates the writers own senses. However, this exposure and exploration can only be effective if the writer looks beneath the surface to seek intricate details about people places and things. Additionally, it can only be effective if the writer values their personal perspective such that their writings highlight details in ways no one else can. It Is shaped by its context since the immediate environment that an individual is exposed to throughout the course of their life influences their thoughts on people places and things. Its also shaped by the user who ought to carefully select their words so that specific tones are identified in their writing.
