Assignment #1 (Thesis Statement/Annotated Bibliography): This assignment is designed to aid students in the writing of their term paper by obliging them to formulate a thesis statement and to do some of the readings relevant to the term paper well in advance of the final submission. This assignment also introduces students to the craft of critical reading and summary, as well as providing an opportunity to practice the bibliographic form. This assignment will include a preliminary annotated bibliography (wherein you identify and carefully elaborate the authors’ theses in each of the sources selected as well as how you plan to use them) consisting of at least five (5) scholarly secondary sources (NOT INCLUDING THE TEXTBOOK) as well as a strong thesis statement RELEVANT TO EUROPEAN HISTORY (ca. 1500-present) that clearly lays out the position you intend to argue in your term paper. Bibliographic entries and citations for this assignment and the term paper must be in the Chicago Style used in the historical discipline.
