Directions: Read and annotate the “Learning to Read” excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X, with the assistance of Alex Haley. Pay particular attention to the process that Malcolm X went through in order to develop his reading skills and the impact that reading had upon his life. Reflect back upon our own experiences learning to read and the ways in which reading has influenced your life. Compose a minimum three page essay in which you compare how you learned to read and the impact that reading has had on your life to the process which Malcolm X went through to develop his skills as a reader and the impact that reading had upon his life. Do you find that your experiences learning to read and the role that reading has had in your life to be more similar or more different than that of Malcolm X? Requirements/Criteria for Grading (100 points)  3 or more full pages, MLA style and format, internal documentation  Cite information and quote from the Malcolm X excerpt: “Learning to Read”  Introduction (1/2 page) engages your audience, broadly presents the topic of reading, then funnels to one of the patterns to introduce Malcolm X and his learning to read, shifts the focus to you as a reader, and narrows to your thesis argument.  Support paragraph topic sentences connect to the thesis and argue the point  Body paragraphs (1/2 page) are well developed; include quotations, paraphrasing, and explanation, critical analysis, and evaluation.  Conclusion (1/4th page) explains the larger impact.  Proofreading shows careful attention to issues such as punctuation (especially quotation marks and commas)
