Critical Thinking

Hypodermic Needle Exchange, Yay and Nay The purpose of this two-part midterm assignment is to assist you in defending both sides of an issue. Doing requires the ability to critically analyze all potential arguments for or against an issue. A well-prepared defense is to understand both sides of an argument. The issue is as follows: The exchange of dirty hypodermic needles for clean ones, or the sale of clean ones, is legal in many states. In such states, the transmission of HIV and hepatitis from dirty needles is down dramatically. But bills [in the California legislature] to legalize clean-needle exchanges have been stymied by the last two governors, who earnestly but incorrectly believed that the availability of clean needles would increase drug abuse. Our state, like every other state that has not yet done it, should immediately approve legislation to make clean needles available. (Adapted from an editorial by Marsha N. Cohen, professor of law at Hastings College of Law). The first part of your midterm assignment is to write a 2 page essay using APA format in which you clearly identify the issue(s) supporting the exchange of dirty hypodermic needles for clean ones. Use references to support your argument. Be sure to review the rubric below under "Grading criteria" for more details on how your paper will be graded. Also, please review what Purdue's OWL for help in developing your argument essays.

The notion of slope formula
The slope characterizes the inclination angle to the horizontal axis (angular coefficient is numerically equal to the tangent of the angle). The slope is present in the equation of a straight line and is used in the mathematical analysis of the curves, where the slope is always equal to the derivative of the function. To better understand the slope, imagine that it affects the speed of function changing, that is, the greater the value of the slope, the greater the value of the function (with the same value of the independent variable). The coefficient k in the line formula y = kx + b on the coordinate plane is numerically equal to the tangent of the angle, which constitutes the smallest turn of the Ox axis to the Oy axis, between the positive direction of the x-axis and a straight line. The tangent of the angle can be calculated as the ratio of the opposite leg to an adjacent leg.
