World Perspectives - The Social Experience.

Unit Two is entitled World Perspectives - The Social Experience. As individuals, we are part of a larger social system and, to one degree or another, we are both shaped by it and responsible to it. Through the ages, people have dreamt of creating the perfect society, one that served both the individual as well as the common good. One of the challenges highlighted in history and in literature is striking the balance between individual and societal rights and responsibilities. This "balance" between an individual and society is the source of much good literature. Authors seem to take a particular interest in exploring the role of an individual in his/her society, and also the role of a society to its individuals. For various reasons, as authors try to express their themes about our world, they tend to illustrate the "dark" side of individuals and society. For the following two selections listed below, in a well developed essay, discuss how the "dark" side of humanity is explored by the author. What comment can you make about each author's view on this "balance" between an individual's and society's rights and responsibilities? Lord of the Flies and ONE of the following: "The Lottery" "A Modest Proposal"
