The Need for Dramatic Conflict in A Streetcar Called Desire by Tennessee Williams and Loss of life of a Salesman by Arthur Miller

Dramatic conflicts occur when dominant persons or groups regard themselves as typical against which others should be measured. With reference to specific moments from at least two takes on you have studied, discuss the importance of such conflicts and how they happen to be explored.

Both Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, illustrate a change in social norms to the present post-war, industrialized, patriarchy-dominated 1950s America; while in Streetcar, typical transforms from the Out of date, Southern aristocracy to the working-class reaching the American Fantasy, in Salesman, Miller illustrates a change in what the American Aspiration represents and how it could be achieved, from Willy’s ‘well-liked’ philosophy to a capitalist-driven mindset. Due to both protagonists’ inability to adjust to this norm, dramatic conflicts between other heroes arise; in Streetcar, Blanche’s incongruity to the brand new environment drives her clash with Stanley, the key antagonist, while in Salesman, Willy’s persistent belief in the merits to be ‘well-liked’ instead of spending so much time makes conflict with Howard. The discordance between former and current cultures, obvious in the antagonistic relationships, is usually central to the dramatic conflicts in both has; the protagonists’ inability to adjust to the dominant paradigm shift is their greatest downfall.

In Streetcar, Williams instantly establishes Blanche’s incongruity with her surroundings (and therefore New America)
