An Analysis of the Ontological Argument of St. Anselm's Proof for the Existence of God

St. Anselm’s proof for the existence of God is described as an ontological argument. St. Anselm states that “Even a fool, when he hears of…a being than which nothing greater can be conceived…understands what he hears, and what he understands is in his understanding…And assuredly that, than which nothing greater can be conceived, cannot exist in the understanding alone”. To break down Anselm’s argument one might start by saying that, by definition, nothing can be imagined that is greater than God. Next, things that can be both imagined and actually exist, are greater than things that can solely be imagined. Therefore, if nothing can be greater than God, then God must also exist in reality. In summary, things that both exist and can be imagined are greater than those that can solely be imagined, therefore God must exist both as an idea and in reality since nothing can be greater than God. Gaunilo, a monk, rejects this idea and reasoning presented by St. Anselm, and creates a counter example. He says, “You can no longer doubt that this island which is more excellent than all lands exists somewhere, since you have no doubt that it is in your understanding. And since it is more excellent not to be in the understanding alone, but to exist both in
