Rape and Tolerance – Two Main Problems

There are not fully clarified circumstances that set a different angle to the consideration of these concepts – rape and tolerance. First, their implied mutual conditioning is not completely transparent. Secondly, more importantly, the leading, substantial side in the rape-tolerance pair is still rape. Tolerance is a reflection of the historical level of deterrence of negative human feelings and violence, the level and forms of recognition of each other by the opposing sides, it is a passive consequence. Thirdly, the positive functions of rape are more anthropologically valuable than the positive functions of tolerance but the reverse is still wrong: the negative functions of rape are more dangerous than the negative functions of tolerance.

Tolerance is a category invented relatively recently to denote a certain qualitative (moral-legal) criterion developed for the measurement of historical and social levels of mutual tolerance (acceptance) of people. Moreover, tolerance is a specific new formation, an ideological construct over the 20th century, which expresses and legitimizes the resentment and social revenge before marginal groups.

One way or another, but the basic concept that reveals the content of the new formation of tolerance remains ancient, we can say archetypal word patience. Accordingly, it is its meanings that must be correlated with the concept of rape.

The experience of tolerance is the experience of protest (against), acceptance, and recognition of rape:

  • Protesting through the passive reactions of enduring, tolerance qualifies rape – as such or a certain subjectively unacceptable part of it – as undeserved and unjust.
  • Steadily accepting violence through the reactions of patience, tolerance qualifies some forms as distant (state, corporate interests) and near violence (family, friends, neighbors, bosses and co-workers) – as legitimate, legal, expected (habitual).
  • The resulting recognition of coercion, the constraint of freedom as a result of experience of their rationalization, violence, in the end, is qualified as metaphysically inevitable, the rules of the game of this world.

From this follows another interesting feature of tolerance – its ambivalence and selectivity. To one kind of rape, a person becomes tolerant, admits it, demolishes it, accepts and recognizes it as his (from his close circle of relatives, friends, and loved ones) or our (upbringing, rationing of society). Other (above the norm or alien) rape is tolerated with challenge, rejection, with the threat of resistance, and attempts at retaliatory deterrence. It is not humanized, not warmed by opportunistic moods of indulgence.

There are not fully clarified circumstances that set a different angle to the consideration of these concepts – rape and tolerance. First, their implied mutual conditioning is not completely transparent. Secondly, more importantly, the leading, substantial side in the rape-tolerance pair is still rape.
