How Dicken’s Childhood Affected His Writing

The childhood of this famous writer affected his writing considerably. Throughout his life, Charles Dickens wrote literary works that prove this statement. People claim that what they experience and learn in the childhood often reflects their adult attitude and actions. He is one of the most popular writers, and he reflected his childhood experiences and upbringing in many works. Basically, Dickens spent most of his childhood in Kent and London, and this fact is often reflected in his novels.

When he was only 12 years old, he needed to work in a local show polishing factory. It was a major change for Dickens after belonging to the upper middle class. He hated this life experience a lot, as it haunted him throughout the whole life. Dicken often felt abandonment and humiliation because of that. Similar experiences are often described in his novels, including David Copperfield, which is a story about one boy who misses out his childhood in exchange for many responsibilities and hard work.

In Great Expectations, the author provides readers with a sense of his own presence as Pip. This is how he portrays his younger self, and this character also explores a sense of shame and guilt that haunted Dickens for many years, even after achieving success, fame, and wealth. He succeeded to provide his novels with enough life because he filled them with true emotions that Dickens carried through his childhood and young life. Besides, his later novels went from different comic tales based only on one major character into the literary works with a great insight, seriousness, and relevance.

In many cases, Dickens chose to portray himself into major characters pictured in popular novels. He also performed a number of lectures in opposition of slavery. This fact proves that the writer was wealthy, but he still remembered his bad childhood experiences and felt bad for slaves. Some readers like his works because of their sympathy and humor, while others rank them highly due to their sharp perception of people’s nature.

There are many novels written by Dickens that show non-comedy and important matters used by the author as he got older. These stories tell many tragedies because of his childhood and upbringing because he didn’t have any financial support from his own family. Dickens had to go through lonely living and humiliation when he needed their support most of all.
