Drugs - Causing Bodily Harm

The intake of drugs still remains quite a controversial subject in the modern society. Basically, addicts prove a direct link between using drugs and suffering from their harsh effects. People can start abusing them for a number of reasons. In many cases, the intake of drugs serves a certain purpose or gives a specific reward. Reasons for their use differ with their different types. For example, people may start using them for depression, pain relief, weariness, religion, and so on.

The negative consequences of drug abuse exist, regardless of whether addicts take illegal or legal drugs. They include serious heart diseases, cirrhosis, cancer, HIV, stroke, lung problems, etc. Untreated drug addiction and risky use of drugs contributes to many health conditions that require medical treatments. The worst part is that these negative effects are responsible for up to 20% of deaths in the world.

Addictive drugs overload the reward brain center with dopamine, thus causing negative brain effects. When not using them, users often experience depression, and it results in their compulsive drug intake. Their long-term substance abuse affects normal brain functioning and brings learning difficulties, memory loss, impaired judgement, and other negative consequences. For example, the abuse of marijuana leads to short-term memory issues, while alcohol shrinks the brain and increases a possible risk of dementia.

Different inhaled substances, such as crack cocaine, tobacco, heroin, and others, damage people’s lungs. They cause such negative effects as chronic bronchitis, coughing, worsened asthma, etc. Sedatives, heroin, and narcotic painkillers disrupt a drive to breathe, so they may result in respiratory arrest. There are many deaths from lung cancer and obstructive pulmonary diseases linked to smoking. Inhalants cause asphyxiation because a concentration of inhaled fumes can replace oxygen in lungs.

Alcohol leads to a number of negative digestive system effects, such as cirrhosis, acid reflux, stomach inflammation, pancreas, and others. Excessive alcohol consumption is responsible for many pancreatitis cases. Liver damage is another common harsh outcome of using inhalants, heroin, alcohol, and anabolic steroids, while cocaine abuse may result in quite painful gastric ulcers. Vomiting and nausea are common symptoms after drug intake.
