The Book of Great Expectations

There are many reasons why certain writings become classics, and other not. As for the “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens, it is definitely an exceptional piece of classic writing with a unique and engaging plot and a variety of rich themes, important issues and symbolism. This novel is totally filled with eccentric and bright characters that make the book impossible to ignore. The novel was serialised for the first time in 'All the Year Round' and was ranging during a year. The style of writing in the novel is very original and shows a lot about the talent, wisdom and depth of thinking of the author. The novel is set in first person, where Pip, the narrator, also appears to be the main character. The language used in the book is quite strange. There is a certain mix of old and contemporary English which makes the novel not a very easy piece to read. However, once the reader gets used to it, he can't stop reading any more and it's not that difficult to follow the plot.

The discussed book is considered as one of his greatest and one of his most complex and sophisticated novels. It has been adapted for stage and screen by different authors more than two hundred and fifty times. One of the most important and usually used tools that authors applies to illustrate the major themes of his works is a character that undergoes several major changes throughout the story. Nevertheless, it is obvious that Great Expectations is the story of Pip and his great dreams that ends up with disappointments that eventually lead to him to becoming a genuinely warmhearted, pleasant and wise man. The drastic changes that Pip's character goes through are very valuable to one of the novel's many themes. Dickens takes advantage from Pip's life journey and his transformation from an innocent boy into a wise gentleman and his redemption as a good-natured person to show the idea how outer circumstances can effect some people, but at the same time, that people with kind nature will remain such regardless of circumstances and obstacles.

In the beginning of the novel, Pip is characterized as a harmless, kind, loving and caring boy, who gets much empathy from the reader although he is at that complicated point content with his own life. The reader most likely develops warm and empathetic feelings towards the main character right after the first couple of pages of the novel.
