The House on Mango Street

In the novel "The House on Mango Street” there are many themes covered of social and individual importance. The story unfolds when Esperanza, the main character, who is the protagonist, tells how her family moved to the house on Mango Street. As we read, we get to know that before that family actually arrived to their new house and decided to settle there, they moved around quite often. In the process of reading, the reader of the story is developing a sense of Esperanza’s observing and describing skills. From the very start of the novel, she begins to describe minute situations and behaviors of her family members in much detail, while making the description quite engaging and interesting. Although we never get the chance to know how old is Esperanza, we have reasons to assume that she is a teenager of nearly thirteen. She begins to try herself in writing as a way of expressing herself. However, the primary reason is to escape from her surroundings and the neighborhood and immerse herself into the world of literature. As a matter of fact, the novel also includes the little stories of several Esperanza’s neighbors. As we read, we find ourselves watching a picture of people who live across the street, interesting characters who always get into adventures. The girl eventually develops her outlook while writing and observing other people.

Later in the novel, the girl slips right into puberty and immediately likes it when a young boy watches her dancing at a baptism party. As Esperanza was gradually developing her worldview, she came to a friendship with Sally. Although she is a young girl just like Esperanza, she wears black stockings with high heels, bright makeup and short provoking dresses. By means of that, she is just trying to use boys in order to escape from her father, who, as we get to know, abuses his daughter. Having been influenced by Sally, Esperanza eventually gets sexually assaulted by one of the men at the carnival. This was not the only sad experience in Esperanza’s relationships with men, so she wants to simply escape Mango Street. As the story goes, she understands that she will never be completely capable of leaving Mango Street behind. She thinks that if she ever leaves the street, she will still come back to help the people that stayed there. Finally, Esperanza decides that instead of holding her in both arms, Mango Street actually gives her freedom.
