The Hundred Years' War Paper

The hundred years' war is a series of related conflicts between France and England, and it happened in the 14th and the 15th centuries. Actually, the duration of this war is even longer than 100 years, and this name was invented by historians on the past. Tension between these countries over the continental land is dated back to the 11th century, and it increased between the increasing power of French kings and their most powerful English royal vassals. It eventually led to a famous armed conflict.

As the profits taken from Aquitaine increased, this region became important. The direct start of this war dates back to 1337 when Phillip confiscates the Ducky of this region and wanted to reassert his control. The main thing that changed this conflict is the reaction of Edward III because he claimed a French throne for himself. Many historians still hesitate whether he really wanted to get a throne or he just used it as an effective bargain chip.

There are different alternate views on this war. Some people consider it as a major conflict between these countries, while others view it as a struggle between major nobles and the crown to control important trading areas and key ports in France. This war can be equally considered as a certain struggle between the central French authority and local independencies and laws.

This war is also closely connected with Joan of Arc, a legendary young woman-warrior. This peasant woman arrived to claim that some mystic voices told her that her main mission was freeing France from all English forces. Her major impact revitalized the opposition and they defeated England a few times. However, Joan was captures and executed by enemies, but the opposition already had a new king.

What about the effects of this war? France ended up with its severe damage because official armies conducted bloody raids, killed many civilians, burnt buildings, etc. Many areas turned into depleted, and people were either massacred or fled. The economy of this country was damaged considerably. In contrast, England started this war with better tax structures and accountability, but its revenues still reduced a lot when it was ended, so it incurred substantial losses. Any war brings its devastating effects on each party involved in a conflict, but this one was really tragic in many ways.
