The Delaying of Gratification

In 1960, Professor of Stanford University Walter Michelle began to conduct a number of important psychological researches. In the experiments of Michelle and his team, hundreds of children took part (most of them were 4–5 years old). During the study, scientists discovered what is now one of the most important characteristics of success in life, work, and health.

The experiment began with the fact that each child was taken to a separate room, seated in a chair, given a marshmallow, and then offered a deal. If the child during the absence of the researcher does not eat marshmallows, then he will get the second one, and if he eats it, he will get nothing. It was simple: one marshmallow now or two marshmallows later. The researcher left the room for 15 minutes.

It was quite entertaining to watch the children. Some ate the marshmallow immediately after the door was closed behind the researcher. Others waited, trying to restrain themselves, but, in the end, gave up after a few minutes. Only a few children managed not to succumb to temptation and get two pieces of marshmallow.

The results of the experiment were published in 1972 but the most interesting part was discovered many years after it.

The children who took part in the marshmallow experiment have grown. Scientists at Stanford University continued their research, monitoring the progress of each participant in this or that area of life. What they found was amazing.

Children who did not eat marshmallows and received as a reward the second one had higher grades for SAT, had no problems with addiction, overweight, better tolerated stress, had good social skills, etc. Researchers followed the life of each child for more than 40 years. A group of those who patiently waited 15 minutes to get a second marshmallow, succeeded in all spheres. In other words, experiments have proved that the ability to save pleasure is crucial to success in life.

If you look around, you will see that this applies to everything. If you put off the pleasure of watching TV and do homework instead, you will learn a lot and get higher grades. If you do not buy sweets or chips in the store to satisfy the desire, then you eat at home something useful for health and save money. If you do not succumb to the temptation to finish the training before and make a couple more repetitions, then you will become stronger, and so on.

Success, as a rule, boils down to a preference for the pain of discipline, and not the ease of distraction.
