Ecstasy is known for its unique effect on the human mindset, although not many people are aware of its history and how dangerous it is to use this drug. MDMA was patented more than a century ago, in 1913. It was done by a chemical company in Germany. In the very beginning, it was supposed to serve as a diet medicine, and the patent did not unleash any additional information on its properties and possible effects. Ecstasy became known as it is today only decades later. There is a legend about the usage of ecstasy in the United States army during warfare operations in 1953, although these are only assumptions that haven't been proved until now.
The real research of ecstasy that led to the discovery of the facts as we know them now started due to the initiative of A. Shulgin. He became a research chemist after getting his Biochemistry degree and dedicated his career to the exploration of drugs, such as MDMA. He is also known as the first human who personally used MDMA and reported on its effects afterwards. While Shulgin was committing himself to the legal research of the drug, it has already become popular on the streets.
As a matter of fact, there were near 180 drugs that were the objects of Shulgin's research and he described in detail the action of every one of them. However, it was ecstasy that he considered to be the first and the only drug in the world that, to his mind, was a perfect drug in terms of therapeutic medicine.
In the middle of 1980th MDMA began to be widely discussed and received lots of attention from the public, as well as from the researchers. Soon after the United States Congress accepted a new law foreseeing that any drug that had a potentially dangerous impact on the public should be not legal, ecstasy was banned. It was decided that the time has come to take direct measures against MDMA. There were experiments conducted on rats that have shown that the drug could have harmful impact on the health of humans. However, there was still a beneficial use of ecstasy in terms of psychiatric therapy.
By that time, the use of ecstasy has already risen considerably among drug fans. The peak of MDMA use between young people and students of US colleges was in the beginning and in the middle of 1990th. Even though it was proved that MDMA was not safe for the human health, people were consuming, producing and selling it illegally. Nowadays this drug is still popular in many countries, although it is prohibited by the law.
