This story was reprinted multiple times, since the first publication in the 1970 year. The story is highly rated by many critics and it is the part of the New Canadian Library since the 2010 year. A Bird in the House was first published as series of short stories. As the author, Margaret Laurence writes, these stories are semi-autobiographical. Instead of Margaret, the main character here is Vanessa MacLeod, a young growing writer. Vanessa MacLeod is an agnostic writer and she is forty, based on the story. During the plot we see, how she is growing up and learns something new about her internal world. She thinks about her childhood and shows it to us, so we can see everything from her perspective. Some events are too complicated from the child’s perspective, so we can understand, that all the emotions about such events the character got when she became older.

The character Vanessa MacLeod lives in the fictional town of Manawaka, Manitoba. There are eight other characters in the story, except Vanessa MacLeod. All of them play some important role for the plot, here are these characters:

The writer’s mother, Beth MacLeod. She is a former nurse, what we can see from the "The Mask of the Bear’’ small story (chapter three). Vanessa is a child in this part of a story and philologically she is a peace maker. In all cases, Vanessa tries to avoid conflicts with everybody, especially with her father, Ewen. We can also see from this chapter, that Vanessa has close relationships with her sister Edna

Vanessa’s father, Ewen. He is really hot-tempered. Like his father, Ewen selected a doctor profession. Vanessa describes him living in times of the Great Depression. He is a doctor, but he is not able to support his family in those times, because all his patients haven’t got enough money to pay him. So he often gets potatoes and chicken instead of money

Vanessa’s younger brother, Roderick. He got his name from his uncle, who died in the World War Two

Vanessa’s grandmother. She couldn’t accept that family goes through difficult times and still orders expensive things from catalogues

The Conners – Edna, Timothy, Agnes and Dan.

Edna is a Bath’s sister, Timothy are Agnes are Vanessa’s maternal grandparents, Dan is her uncle. A Bird in the House is an interesting story, that describes the internal growth of the author-character and the author, who created her.
