The Ammonia Production Social Relevance Report

Ammonia is an alkaline gas with no color and it consists of nitrogen and 3 parts of hydrogen. This gas is lighter than the air and it’s characterized by a stinging and sharp odor. People can inhale it safely if it’s diluted in the air considerably. However, when it’s concentrated, it can result in death and suffocation, so it’s dangerous. Ammonia doesn’t burn in the air, but it can burn in oxygen while emitting a yellow flame.

When it comes to its basic properties, this gas is quite soluble in the water because it can form specific hydrogen bonds with pole molecules. Ammonia can freeze to something solid and boil, so it goes from its liquid form to a gas while absorbing a lot of heat from the surrounding. For example, 1g absorbs about 330 heat calories, and that’s why it’s often used in modern refrigeration equipment.

This gas is used as an effective solvent in chemical labs because it works better than ethanol, but it’s not as good as water. Ammonia can dissolve such alkali metals as calcium, barium, and others because it forms a blue and unstable solution that contains free electrons and metal ion that release hydrogen by slowly decompressing. This gas is used in a range of chemical reactions because it reacts with many strong acids and some metal ions. It participates in different reduction and oxidation reactions. Ammonia also reduced all kinds of hot metal oxides to metals.

Nowadays, this gas is used for a number of purposes, such as bleaching, cleaning, deodorizing, and others. It’s often sold for specific household uses as a dilute water solution, but people need to use it with enough caution because it attacks eyes and skin. Ammonia is also used as an effective fertilizer to increase the crop production. The modern textile industry uses it to produce synthetic fibers, including nylon. It’s also used in scouring and dyeing such materials as wool, cotton, and others.

Sometimes, ammonia water can serve as the cleaning fluid that restores the fabrics stained by acids. This chemical is also important for manufacturing a number of plastics, chemicals, medications, and vitamins. It can act as an efficient catalyst when making different plastics, and people use it as a good reactant to make melamine resins. Ammonia is produced after combining hydrogen and nitrogen in the process that people call the Haber-Bosch reaction.
