Joseph Conrad and Morality in Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad was a brilliant British author who considered one of the best novelists in the English language ever. In his novella, Heart of Darkness he studies the theme of morality and does it in a fantastic way. The connection between narrative style and moral judgment in literature is an issue in aesthetic philosophy that stretches back to Plato. Joseph Conrad’s novella Heart of Darkness brilliantly reveals European values and examines them in various conditions. This book tells us about the situation when somebody lets go of moral constructs and enter into the chaos of a self-made world. Conrad wants to shows us how quickly morals can be changed and forgotten.

The main character Charlie Marlow goes on a journey with the European Ivory Trade to Africa. Marlow discovers just how easy it is to become inhuman without a structured society of civilization. Greed plays an extremely important role in this novel and shows the abandonment of morals in this novella. Ivory in this story is a symbol of greed and evil. The white men come to Africa to become wealthy but not to bring the civilization. They want more and more power and profit. The character whose name is Kurtz harvested more ivory than the other stations. His power and greed turned him into a thief and a murderer. He becomes a great example of the lack of morality. Ivory rules the characters in the book's actions. Kurtz is a man who tried to go beyond "human morality" and in this attempt he fails.

The main goal of white people in life is to get more ivory. Moral views now cost nothing. Colonists are ruled by greed and desire to get more profit from this place and these people. They behave quite selfishly and don’t care about the people they desire to profit from. Their strict European values and morals have been completely destroyed out by greed. The moral goal of Europeans coming into Africa was to civilize the natives and make their lives better, but instead, they ended up colonizing their land and corrupting them. The natives are just victims of imperialism. The main moral dilemma in this novella is the lack of a stable moral system with a center to hold moral decisions. The Europeans become the victims of greed. They refuse their moral and we can see their decline as humans.

So Conrad wanted to say how morals are only an imaginary set of rules made by a society and once somebody is taken from that usual area, they lose almost all moral sense.
