The Difference between Plant and Animal Cells

The plant cell differs from the animal cell by the following features:

  • a strong cell wall of considerable thickness
  • special organoids – plastids, in which the primary synthesis of organic substances from mineral occurs due to the energy of light
  • developed network of vacuoles, which largely determine the osmotic properties of cells

In the plant cell, there are all the organoids that are characteristic of the animal cell: the nucleus, the endoplasmic reticulum, the ribosomes, the mitochondria, and the Golgi apparatus. At the same time, the plant cell has significant differences.

The plant cell, like the animal cell, is surrounded by a cytoplasmic membrane, but apart from it, it is bounded by a thick cell wall consisting of cellulose, which is not found in animal cells. The cell wall has pores through which the channels of the endoplasmic network of neighboring cells communicate with each other.

The predominance of synthetic processes over the processes of energy release is one of the most characteristic features of the metabolism of plant organisms. The primary synthesis of carbohydrates from inorganic substances is carried out in plastids.

There are three types of plastids:

  • leucoplasts - colorless plastids, in which there is a synthesis of starch from monosaccharides and disaccharides (there are leucoplasts, storing proteins or fats)
  • chloroplasts, including the pigment chlorophyll, where photosynthesis is carried out
  • chromoplasts containing various pigments, causing a bright color of flowers and fruits

Plastids can pass into each other. They contain DNA and RNA and multiply by dividing in two. Vacuoles develop from endoplasmic reticulum cisterns, contain proteins, carbohydrates, low molecular weight synthesis products, vitamins, various salts, and are surrounded by a membrane in a dissolved form. The osmotic pressure created by the substances dissolved in the vacuolar juice leads to the fact that water enters the cell and a turgor, the tension of the cell wall, is created. Turgor and thick elastic shells of cells determine the strength of plants to static and dynamic loads.
