History and Origin of Music

It is assumed that the emergence of modern man occurred about 160,000 years ago in Africa. About 50,000 years ago, people settled in all the habitable continents. Since all the people in the world, including the most isolated tribal groups, have some forms of music, historians have come to the conclusion that music should have been present to the first people in Africa. It is assumed that after the appearance in Africa, music exists for at least 50,000 years and gradually turned into an integral part of human life throughout the planet.

Prehistoric music is an oral musical tradition. Modern American and Australian Aboriginal music is sometimes also called prehistoric, but this term is commonly used for European music. For the prehistoric music of non-European continents, the terms folk or traditional music is often used.

Flute is the oldest musical instrument found by scientists.

The prehistoric era ends with the transition to a written musical tradition. The next era was called music of the ancient world. The oldest known song, recorded on a cuneiform tablet, was found on the excavations of Nippur. It dates back to 2000 BC. The tablet was deciphered by Professor AD Kilmer of the University of Berkeley. It was composed in thirds and used the Pythagoras system.

Ancient music is a general term used to describe music in the European classical tradition since the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD and until the end of the Baroque era in the middle of the 18th century. Music within this huge period of time was extremely diverse, encompassing multiple cultural traditions within a wide geographic area. The unifying beginning of these cultures in the Middle Ages was the Roman Catholic Church, and its music served as a focal point for musical development during the first thousand years of this period. Secular old music also survived in a large number of sources.

According to the testimony of numerous ancient documents and artistic images, the musical life of the early Middle Ages was quite rich. However, history has preserved to this day mainly the liturgical music of the Roman Catholic Church, a significant part of which is occupied by the so-called Gregorian chant, named after Pope Gregory I.

During the 9th century, there were several important events in the development of music of the Middle Ages. First, the Catholic Church began to make significant efforts to unify various directions of the Gregorian chant and bring them all into the framework of the Gregorian liturgy. The second important event was the appearance of early polyphonic music. The third and most important event for the history of music was the attempts to recreate musical notation.
