Basic Facts about the Human Skeletal System

The skeletal system of an adult consists of more than 200 bones, including a special network of cartilage, ligaments, and tendons that connects them all. Basically, it performs important viral functions, such as movements, support, calcium storage, protection, endocrine regulation, and blood cell production. They all are responsible for enabling people to survive. All animals having internal skeletons made of bones are vertebras.

When human infants are born, they have around 270 bones, and some of them fuse together as their bodies develop. When people reach their adulthood, they have a bit more than 200 bones according to the latest research. It’s interesting that the skeletons of adult men and women have specific variations based on the ability to childbirth. For example, a male pelvis is 90% less of angle, while the female one is more rounded and larger.

Bones become brittle outside the human body, but they are alive inside of it. The main reason is that they are fed by the network of blood vessels and nerves. Each standard bone has a tough and dense outer layer. Next, there is a layer of spongy bones, which is lighter and more flexible. In the middle of certain bones, there is some bone marrow that is like a jelly. This is where new cells are produced for the blood on an ongoing basis.

Teeth also belong to the human skeletal system, but they are not called bones. They consist of enamel and dentin, the strongest substances in the human body. Teeth also play an important role in people’s digestive system. This system also has 2 important parts, appendicular and axial skeletons. The axial one consists of 80 bones, rib cage, vertebral column, and a skull. It’s responsible for transmitting the weight from a head and upper parts down to lower parts, including hip joints that help people maintain their upright posture.

The appendicular skeleton has more than 120 bones, and it’s formed by pectoral girdles, pelvic girdle, upper and lower limbs. Their basic function is making running, walking, and other movements possible, while protecting the important organs responsible for excretion, digestion, and reproduction. Finally, the study of the human skeletal system is called orthopedics and it treats the entire skeleton. There are some specific areas, including sports and hand injuries, spine, etc. Different diseases may affect this system too.
