General Definition of Memory

Memory refers to the basic cognitive processes, such as sensation, perception, and thinking, which attract the greatest attention of researchers.

A pioneer in the study of human memory is Hermann Ebbinghaus, who put experiments on himself (the main method was the memorization of meaningless lists of words or syllables).

Memory is a form of mental reflection of reality, consisting in capturing, preserving, recognizing, and reproducing traces of past experience. Memory provides the integrity of a person’s personality and its connection with past experiences.

The extraction of material from memory is carried out using two processes – reproduction and recognition.

Reproduction is the process of recreating the image of an object perceived by a person earlier, but not at the moment. Reproduction differs from perception in that it is performed without affecting the receptors of signals from the external environment and occurs after perception.

Recognition of an object occurs at the time of its perception, and information about this object has been previously introduced into the human brain. The idea of this object could be formed in two ways: either on the basis of personal impressions, or on the basis of verbal descriptions.

Another process associated with memory, and at the same time, the opposite of the result, is forgetting. Forgetting is expressed in the impossibility of restoring previously perceived information. Often, the physiological basis of forgetting is the processes of inhibition in the cerebral cortex that interfere with the actualization of temporary nervous connections – this is the so-called extinction inhibition, which develops in the absence of reinforcement. However, other types of forgetting are possible, caused by trauma, some chemical substances, or mental illnesses. Forgetting manifests itself in two main forms: the inability to remember or recognize something, or in the form of an incorrect recall or recognition.

The volume, speed, accuracy, and strength of memory in the aggregate manifestations of their characteristics characterize the effectiveness of the memory of a particular person. Another indicator of the individual-typological features of memory is the leading type of memory of the person: visual, auditory, or kinesthetic.
