Multi-User Games and Their Culture

In modern virtual space, a new cultural phenomenon was born – multimedia online games that include both communicative and entertaining functions. What is behind this new way of cultural communication?

MMORPG is abbreviation that literally stands for massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It is an online computer game in which a large number of users interact with each other in a virtual world, having certain roles.

In multi-users games, the player is offered the role of a fictional character and the ability to control his or her actions. These games are different from single-player and small network role-playing games by the facts that a lot of players paly them, as well as the virtual world that continues to exist even in the absence of a player. The virtual world is supported by the publisher of the game after its release.

In a virtual world, players can perform various actions interacting with each other. There are also computer-controlled characters (NPCs), including the hostile ones (mobs). In most games for the destruction of enemies, players receive a reward and earn experience points. Gained experience points, the player uses to improve the skills and abilities of the character. Remuneration (game currency) forms the basis of economic relations between the participants in the game.

In many multi-user games, players have the opportunity to create internal associations (guilds, clans), whose members can adhere to a certain policy in relation to other players and associations. In some games, characters upon the first appearance in the world are neutral, in others they are initially hostile to certain characters according to the plot of the game.

In the majority of paid MMORPG, players purchase a subscription, Sometimes, publishers require a one-time purchase of a copy of the game. Free games can simply be downloaded online. Often, they use a system of microtransactions – the acquisition of in-game items for real money.

Entering the game world, and spending a lot of time in it, you can no longer distinguish between the reality and the fantasy of the game. It is not so bad you play innocent games such as Farmer, where all you need to do is to monitor the farm. It is much worse, if a person is addicted to games, in which there is a lot of violence, blood, and other cruelties.
