Analysis on Gary Soto's Literary Styles

Gary Soto, American poet and novelist was born in Fresno, California in 1952. His parents were working-class people who often struggled to find work. Gary Soto is known for his works that are connected with the realities of growing up in Mexican-American communities. Soto is one of the most significant writers in Chicano literature. Through his poems, novels, short stories, plays and over a two dozen books Soto skilfully portrayed the life, work, and joys of the Mexican American agricultural laborer. He is indisputably an outstanding writer that is popular nowadays.

Gary Soto writes in a very interesting style. Therefore, all his books are really well-written. Soto has described brilliantly the world of the barrio, the urban, Spanish-speaking neighborhood where he was raised. He described the places, sounds and smells of his life in his books. His realism is really charming and maybe a bit magical. He describes the life of Chicanos as it really was, including racism, poverty, and crime.

Soto uses a lot of references to body shape in his books. Also, he uses a lot of descriptions of food and a lot of dialogue. The reason why he does so is that he wants to provide readers with a full understanding and a good description of what is supposed to be going on at the time. He uses so many descriptions of food because when he was young he didn’t have enough food to eat. Another thing that he uses a lot of his writing is Chicano (Mexican-American) words. He did so because he grew up in a Chicano community of the San Joaquin Valley, California. Soto also seeks to be linked and read by Mexican readers. For the readers who don't know what those words mean, he usually includes a glossary where he explains unknown words.

Every Soto’ work has its own style and is unusual. There are many important themes in Soto’s poetry. One of the earliest is his idea that the natural world is a wasteland. Soto’s prose—including memoirs, short stories, and novels—also reveals themes that are main to his poetry.

Soto explored universal themes like alienation, family life, and choices and this has made him quite popular for young and adolescent readers. So Gary Soto is an outstanding Chicano writer who influenced his culture a lot. His literature style is absolutely unique and his poetry is well-recognized. His pictures of Mexican American life is really touching and shows what a skillful writer he is.
