Literacy and Theories of Cognitive Development

There are many differences and similarities when it comes to theories of cognitive development offered by Vygotsky and Piaget. It’s worth examining their role in the significance of all kinds of social interactions and influencing this development. Basically, the theory of Vygotsky is more focused on social interactions, while the one of Piaget involves personal cultural influences.

The theory of cognitive development and literacy explains people how they construct and get the knowledge of the world and themselves. It was first introduced by Piaget, but there are other interesting theoretical approaches, including the theory of Vygotsky. Piaget approached this subject from specific life and biological perspectives, while Vygotsky used both cultural and environmental perspectives.

Both theories have their interesting influences on cognitive development, and they are both different and similar. The theory of Piaget is more focused on intelligence and how it alters as kids grow up. The one of Vygotsky is focused on social actions, and he defines intelligence as the ability of people to learn from teaching. Both theories have their interesting impact on education too. Piaget offered an overview of the process of gaining the knowledge and intellectual development of kids, while Vygotsky was focused on how culture influences cognitive development through the society and language.

Based on Piaget, this development happens via interactions with different environmental events and it progresses through a number of qualitative stages. All children pass through them at the same level, unless they have serious brain problems or disorders. This theory doesn’t explain individual differences because Piaget was interested in how intelligence can change as kids grow.

Vygotsky was interested in relations between cognitive development and being taught by adults. His theory is famous for social development approaches, but they both agree that this development doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Vygotsky succeeded to offer an alternative to the theory developed by Piaget, and he believed that cognitive development is a social event that happens through interactions and language. He claimed that children can learn when challenging their normal surroundings, and Vygotsky was focused on proximal growth, culture, and language role.
