Discussing Racism in United States

Racism is defined as people’s belief that some skin color, race, ethic or national identity is superior to others. Unfortunately, this belief has been a part of the US landscape the 17th century. There are different groups that manifested discriminatory social practices, laws, and even criminal behaviors directed towards a targeted group. Learn a few interesting and clear examples of these experiences.

First, racism against Native Americans started with the arrival of Europeans on the shores of North America and their plan to conquer their land. They believed that Native Americans were savages who needed to be civilized, and it resulted in such negative outcomes as mass murder, genocide, forced assimilation, stolen land, etc. The media portrayal of them as bloodthirsty savages justified European abuses against them. Negative long-term effects include the fact that Native Americans still have the highest suicide rate of the US groups.

Racism against African-Americans started when many Africans were brought to this continent as slaves. They were kidnapped from their homeland in different parts of Africa. African children, men, and women were stripped of their identities and names, whipped, tortured, beaten, hanged, and so on. Their white masters believed that slavery was the main key to maintaining their land and properties. Many families were separated via the process of selling and buying slaves. For those Africans who were free in America, special discriminatory laws barred that from voting and owning any property.

Although slavery was outlawed and modern America has the laws that prohibit any discrimination against African-Americans, racism against them still remains, but it’s manifested in more subtle ways nowadays. According to the latest stats, black people are faced with their discrimination in some job interviews.

Racism against Japanese-Americans was intensified after bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. They were regular targets of discrimination, harassment, and surveillance. That’s why many of them lost their businesses, jobs, and homes, but the worst part is that Japanese-Americans were called the enemies of the state in 1942. Many of them were sent to special camps, including children. Some people died in these camps because of lacking proper medical attention, while others were killed for failing to obey orders.
