The Curse of Macbeth

In the theatrical circles, there is a belief that Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a curse, so it’s very dangerous to stage this play. Is it really? The legend of the curse of Macbeth is one of the most enduring theatrical superstitions, prevalent in the theater.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth is simply called a Scottish play or that Bard’s play because even pronouncing the name Macbeth means incurring bad luck. It seems that evil rock pursues anyone who dares to stage a play and even those who lightly pronounce its name in the theater.

According to legend, the curse of Macbeth was dictated by three witches, who, as they worked with spells, cooked the drug. According to the same legend, Shakespeare took dialogues and witch incantations from real life and thus condemned the play to eternal misfortunes.

It is believed that Shakespeare with his play wanted to please King James I, who in 1597 wrote the book Daemonologie. The book was devoted to witchcraft and magic, but the author warned readers against its use. According to one version, in the famous scene with the witches, Shakespeare used some spells from the book of King James, probably hoping to gain this favor of the king. And although this version is not supported by convincing evidence, the legend says that some practicing witches watched the play and saw in it a mockery of their sacred craft, and therefore they cursed all those who would somehow be associated with Macbeth. Therefore, now, every time a play is being played, three outraged witches awake from oblivion, come to life, and do all sorts of dirty tricks to all those present on the stage and behind the scenes.

If you search online for examples of such disasters – you can find a lot of them. For example, during the scene of the fight, the actors were seriously injured and even killed because the fake weapon for some incomprehensible reason was replaced by the real one. During the performances, fire broke out in the theater and the surrounding area was repeatedly shaken by the earthquake. Other natural disasters are mentioned as well. In addition, members of the troupe were struck by serious ailments both before and after the production.

The most convincing evidence of the legendary curse are riots in the theater Astor Place Theater in New York in 1849. In order to pacify the raging public, it was necessary to call the National Guard, which opened fire on the crowd. At least 25 people were killed and about 120 wounded. The riots were caused by a conflict between two public camps, supporting two actors who played the role of Macbeth that evening in two different theaters. In fact, the brawl was not connected with the divergence of the aesthetic tastes but with the class disagreements of the local residents.
